Beyond Theory: Operating a Shift Register

Have you ever been trying to learn how to do something and looked around online for help but got the impression that everybody else knew how to do it but never shared how? I know I certainly have. Recently, I had to teach myself how to use shift registers and decided that rather than leaving other people like me in the dark, I would create an Instructable on how to actually use the shift register instead of just presenting the theory of how it works.
